It feels like it was only yesterday that Fall semester ended; yet, at the same time, it feels like forever ago. The time has certainly gone quickly – but, also, much has happened! Thus, I am excited to post this second end of the semester update to share what God has been doing in my life this past Spring!
This past Saturday, I celebrated commencement at MNU – my very first
commencement walking as a faculty member. It was a beautiful ceremony, and the perfect finale to a year that has been full of such growth, change, and new beginnings. This also means that I have now spent a full academic year in my new position at MidAmerica Nazarene University – and it has been an incredible journey already. While I have grown tremendously through my time at MNU this past year, I recognize that there is so much more growing for me to do in this position – and, I’m excited to continue serving as a librarian at MNU for the 18/19 academic year! Now that I am “settled” into the position, I hope to become much more embedded in the community this year, and to more intentionally prioritize building relationships both with faculty and students.
Music & Arts:
This semester, I have continued to grow in my upright bass adventures. While I did not play in ensembles this semester, I was able to focus more heavily on enhancing my solo playing. I now have a solid repertoire of polished solo pieces to perform! I performed a few at two concerts as missions fundraisers, and I would love to find more opportunities to play this summer. I see my music as an outlet to worship God through song and to bless others while doing it. So, I would love to do this more often!
I also organized a poetry reading through my position at MNU Library, which was so much fun! 50+ students/faculty combined attended the reading, and it was such a delightful experience. The plan is to host another reading next semester!
My most recent arts-related project is to organize rotating art displayed at MNU Library. Currently, our walls are bare, and the art would create a much more welcoming and inviting space for students. So, I have been in contact with several local Christian artists, to plan artwork to be shown (2 months at a time) for this next academic year!
Finally, I am planning a session on Research for Creative Writing for this upcoming One year Adventure Novel summer workshop. I have nearly finished planning for this, but pray for wisdom and inspiration as I continue to plan and practice for this session! I am so excited for this chance to merge my information literacy instruction with my love for writing and the OYAN community!
Business English Camp CZ:
Next week I will be embarking on a journey to the Czech Republic! I will be going there
with a missions team to serve at Business English Camp there, organized by Keifer and Caity. The camp will include business instruction, Bible stories, games, activities, workshops, sports, etc. – and through it all, our goal is to spread the joy and love of Christ to the 30+ youth who will be attending!
Personally, I will be teaching the business portion of the camp – which amounts to eight 50-minute sessions on everything from resume-building and interviewing to leadership styles and business ethics. I will be drawing upon my MBA studies to teach this. All lesson plans are created and ready to go, so now I’m able to just pack and pray for the trip! I’ll also be leading a poetry workshop, telling the story of Joseph for one of the evening “God talks”, and leading some board game workshops.
I am greatly looking forward to traveling and serving with a team of wonderful family/friends, and to spending a whole week working with Keifer and Caity! I expect God to do incredible things through this Business English camp, and I can’t wait to see what He does. I would love your prayers in these coming weeks for guidance as we prepare, for wisdom as we are there teaching and serving, and for many opportunities to demonstrate Christ’s love to the Czech youth!
I have continued to stay busy with local missions – StoryBoard, our ministry to the local juvenile detention center, has continued to go well. It is always a huge blessing to play games with the kids for a couple hours each Saturday. Pray for our team as it continues to expand, and pray for guidance and we determine the future of the group
and what our coming goals and priorities are going to be.
This summer, I will also be serving at Missions Adalante on Tuesday nights, helping with their refugee kids program (ages 8-12). This will involved telling Bible stories, playing games, singing songs, etc. with the kids – I am so excited! I have greatly missed working with kids this age, and I am very much looking forward to this opportunity.
Finally, I am planning for a WHDL trip (Wesleyan-Holiness Digital Library) to Costa Rica in October. This will be a week long missions trip to train staff in OPALS (library management system) and catalog materials in Costa Rica libraries. It will be be first international trip with the group – and a wonderful opportunity to serve using my strengths as a librarian!
I would love prayer for each of these opportunities, and for continued guidance into anything else that God might have for me to do!
Specific Prayer Requests:
- Pray for the Business English camp – Keifer & Caity, the missions team, the interns, the students.
- Pray for wisdom in how to be a light in each community God has placed me in. I know He has me in each place for a reason, and I do not want to waste the opportunities He has given me!
- Pray for continued growth, and for this summer to be a valuable time of reflection and preparation for the coming academic year!
“Each time he said: ‘My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness.’ So now I am glad to boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ can work through me.” ~ 2 Corinthians 12:9
